Analysis of shots in relation to the outcome in elite women's water polo matches. [Análisis de los lanzamientos en función del resultado en partidos …
2018
Abstract The aim of the current study was to investigate the shot performance of elite female water polo players according to their match outcome during three international tournaments, the 2012 Olympic Games, 2013 and 2014 FINA World Leagues. Twenty-four official matches footage [2012 Summer Olympic Games, n=8; 2013 FINA World League, n=8 and 2014 FINA World League, n=8] were obtained and analysed. The results showed that a similar playing style was used in both the 2012 and 2013 tournaments, independently of the outcome while in the 2014 FINA World League, winning teams performed more shots after displacement, more shots ending to zone 4 and scored more goals than losing ones (and fewer s…
SPORT FOR JOB. DIFFERENCES IN CORTISOL LEVELS IN A WATER POLO TEAM AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF WORKOUT
2018
Agonistic sport represents a physically stressful situation associated with the release of catecholamine and cortisol that in turn influence the immune system. This study aimed to investigate the influence, in a team of water polo players, of the emotional processes characterizing the phase of waiting for the race on endocrine changes at the end of an official match. Thirteen professional water polo players participated in this study. Each player provided two saliva samples before and after three different time phases: (1) rest time, (2) workout and (3) competition. The results of the present study showed a significant increase in salivary cortisol levels before and after the competition an…

Effects of Rule Changes on Game-Related Statistics in Men's Water Polo Matches
2017
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of rule changes on game-related statistics in men's water polo matches. A total of 856 men's matches played in all Olympic Games and World Championship since 1936 was analysed. The game-related statistics considered were: total goals, winners' goals, losers' goals, goals per minute, goals difference, relationship difference goals and total goals, and relationship difference goals and winners' goals. The rule changes were grouped by structural (game and period) and functional changes (possession time, exclusion time, timing, minimum distance to take a direct shot). Differences between rule changes were determined using a one-way ANOVA. In …

Discriminatory power of water polo game-related statistics at the 2008 Olympic Games
2011
The aims of this study were (1) to compare water polo game-related statistics by context (winning and losing teams) and sex (men and women), and (2) to identify characteristics discriminating the performances for each sex. The game-related statistics of the 64 matches (44 men's and 20 women's) played in the final phase of the Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008 were analysed. Unpaired t-tests compared winners and losers and men and women, and confidence intervals and effect sizes of the differences were calculated. The results were subjected to a discriminant analysis to identify the differentiating game-related statistics of the winning and losing teams. The results showed the difference…
